Cleaning

Regular cleaning: People often wonder whether or not they should vacuum their oriental rugs. The answer is Yes, vacuuming your rug once a week is a fast and efficient way to remove the dirt that might have reached into the foundation threads. However, for weekly vacuuming use a vacuum that works only on suction and does not beat the rug. Always stroke the rug in the direction of the pile or from side to side. Vacuuming against the pile leaves it raised and allows grit to reach the knots more quickly. Always avoid vacuuming the delicate fringe area.

Major Cleaning: Have your rug cleaned once every 3 to 5 years by a professional cleaner.

Rug Care

- Curl Under: an annoying problem that often affects rugs is that their edges tend to curl under. This problem can be easily fixed by taking the rug to a professional repairing who will uncurl the edges by inserting a leather and stitch every few inches.

- Wear and Tear: If the feet of your furniture are sharp or if they are made of metal or if they have small casters attached to them, you must use protections before putting this type furniture on top of your rug. We always recommend that rugs be regularly reversed (turned from end to end) or move a few inches in any direction. Ideally this should be done every six months, although once a year will help too. Moving rugs around as mentioned above alters the tread pattern and helps to prevent low patches from appearing after a few years of use.

- Fading Color: Any light will gradually mellow color. If one part of your rug is always in shadow while the rest of the rug is exposed to daylight, you may notice that eventually the colors become unbalanced. If you put your rug close to a window, turn it frequently so that all parts of it receive an equal amount of light. Sheer curtains are helpful in taking the edge off every bright light. If your windows have those it is unlikely that you will notice any damage in the color of your rug for many years.

Padding NO matter how smooth your floor may be always place some form of padding between the floor and your oriental rug. The padding should be cut a couple of inches smaller that the rug. Having the padding has three advantages:

The unprotected under side of the rug won't wear out

The rug will be much softer to walk on

It won't slip from beneath your feet as you hurry to answer the phone

Caution: Do not use the sheets of plain rubber foam. Foam rubber tends to collect moisture that will eventually rotten your rug.
